A royal version of the people in my little corner of the world.
THE DUTCH ROYAL FAMILY
The House of Orange-Nassau is headed by Queen Beatrix. She and her husband, Prince Claus von Amsberg (1926-2002) have three sons:
Crown Prince Willem-Alexander (b. 1967), Prince Johan-Friso (b. 1968), and Prince Constantijn (b. 1969).
Crown Prince Willem-Alexander is married Máxima Zorreguieta Cerruti (b. 1971), and they are known as the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Orange. The couple have two daughters, Princess Catharina-Amalia (b. 2003) and Princess Amalia (b. 2005). Crown Princess Máxima is pregnant with her third child, due in spring 2007.
Prince Johan-Friso, known simply as Prince Friso, is married to Mabel Wisse Smit (b. 1968). When the couple were married in April 2004, the prince lost his succession rights because he and his fiancee did not fully divulge everything to the government and hence permission for the wedding was not granted. The couple have two daughters, Countess Luana van Oranje-Nassau van Amsberg (b. 2005) and Countess Zaria van Oranje-Nassau van Amsberg (b. 2006).
Prince Constantijn is married to Petra "Laurentien" Brinkhorst (b. 1966). The couple have three children: Countess Eloise van Oranje-Nassau van Amsberg (b. 2002; who is the only grandchild Prince Claus met before he passed away), Count Claus-Casimir van Oranje-Nassau van Amsberg (b. 2004), and Countess Leonore van Oranje-Nassau van Amsberg (b. 2006).
Queen Beatrix has three younger sisters: Princess Irene (b. 1939), Princess Margriet (b. 1943), and Princess Christina (b. 1947). Of the Queen's sisters, only Princess Margriet remains in line to the throne.
Princess Irene was married to Carlos Hugo de Borbón Parma (b. 1930) from 1964 to 1981. No one from Princess Irene's family was permitted to attend the wedding in Rome because she converted to Catholicism for the marriage, therefor surrendering her rights to the Dutch throne. The Duke of Parma also claimed to be the heir to the Spanish throne, a movement known as Carlism. The couple have four children: Prince Carlos Borbón Parma Jr. (b. 1970), Princess Margarita Borbón Parma (b. 1972, twin), Prince Jaime Borbón Parma (b. 1972, twin), and Princess Maria Carolina Borbón Parma (b. 1974).
Princess Margriet was actually born in Ottawa, Canada, where her family was temporarily living during World War II. But by a Canadian government decree, the land around the hospital was declared Dutch land in order for the princess to be born on Dutch territory. She is married to Professor Pieter van Vollenhoven (b. 1939). The couple have four sons: Prince Maurits (b. 1968), Prince Bernhard (b. 1969), Prince Pieter-Christiaan (b. 1972), and Prince Floris (b. 1975).
Prince Maurits is married to Marilène (Marie-Helène) van den Broek (b. 1970). They have three children, whom by a royal decree bear the last name "van Lippe-Biesterfield van Vollenhoven," in honour of Prince Maurit's grandfather, Prince Bernhard Lippe-Biesterfeld: Anastasia "Anna" van Lippe-Biesterfeld van Vollenhoven (b. 2001), Lucas van Lippe-Biesterfeld van Vollenhoven (b. 2002), and Felicia van Lippe-Biesterfeld van Vollenhoven (b. 2005). Prince Maurits and Princess Marilène remain in line to the throne.
Prince Bernhard is married to Annette Sekrève (b. 1972). The couple have two children: Isabella van Vollenhoven (b. 2002) and Samuel van Vollenhoven (b. 2004). Prince Bernhard and Princess Annette are both part of the royal court.
Prince Pieter-Christiaan is married to Anita van Eijk (b. 1969). The couple have one child, Emma van Vollenhoven (b. 2006). Prince Pieter-Christiaan and Princess Anita did not seek permission for their marriage in respect to keep the royal court small. Princess Anita does however bear the honourary title of princess.
Prince Floris is married to Aimée Söhngen (b. 1977). Prince Floris and Princess Aimée did not seek government permission for their marriage in order to keep the royal court small, however Princess Aimée does bear the honourary title of princess.
Princess Christina is the youngest of Queen Beatrix's sisters. She was married from 1975 to 1996 to Jorge Guillermo, a Cuban exile. Because she converted to Catholicism for the marriage, Princess Christina renounced her rights to the throne. The couple have three children: Bernardo Guillermo (b. 1977), Nicolás Guillermo (b. 1979), and Juliana Guillermo (b. 1981)
